Somaiya Vidyvihar opens IMMERSE 2023 - WAYS OF OUR LIVES Art Exhibition with 8 independent artists

For the second time in a row, Somaiya Vidyavihar University presents a community event for artists in the form of a group exhibition and fellowship. The exhibition titled 'Ways of our lives' showcases the artwork of 8 independent artists from various cities in India, curated by Satyam Yadav, inviting them for an opportunity to interact with the arts ecosystem during the Mumbai Gallery Weekend 2023.

These 8 artists and curator in residence are invited to stay in Mumbai at Somaiya Vidyavihar University for the duration of the exhibition in a short intensive artist-in-residence program, ensuring they experience Mumbai and the art ecosystem first-hand.

This event is conceptualized by Al-Qawi Nanavati (Co-Founder, Young Art Support), Natasha Jeyasingh (Founder; Carpe Arte), Shaleen Wadhwana (Independent Curator and Educator) & Siddharth Somaiya (Somaiya Vidyavihar University). The exhibition and fellowship are organised and supported by Somaiya Vidyavihar University and Somaiya Trust.

The second edition of ‘Immerse’ presents itself as a reflection upon outlines, discourses and narratives of human lives under a hegemonic matrix of neoliberal idiosyncrasies, which have increasingly become the governing logic of our times.

In its composite visual vocabulary, the exhibition titled “Ways of Our Lives” revisits conversations around ‘world-ecology’ as a point of reference to extrapolate crucial points of entry into negotiations between capital, environment and modalities of human organisation and experience, which are at once separate and historically interrelated in their current predicament under all-pervading forces of capitalist accumulation.

"Ways of our lives" opens on the 6th of January 2023 at 6 pm at Somaiya Vidyavihar University.

The opening will include a curatorial walk-through and interaction with the artists in their artist studios.

The exhibition and open studios will be on view from the 6th of January 2023 till the 22nd of January 2023 at the Somaiya Vidyavihar University campus in Mumbai.

Artists in residence for the exhibition are Anish Nandy, Bhavin Patel, Bheeshma Sharma, Biswajit Thakuria, Moumita Basak, Shiv Shankar, Srishti Gupta, and Thamshangpha Maku.
