Rad Educators is a 1-year program intended to help beginner artists learn step-by-step techniques from professional artists across different mediums. This is in no way sponsored or promoted by any particular Art Brand.
Heet Bhavsar is a rad educator for realistic drawing with color pencils.
This is a step-by-step tutorial for learning to draw a realistic green apple with the most affordable material.
Material Required -
FABERCASTELL BI-COLOR PENCIL colour set of 18
GELLY ROLL WHITE GEL PEN
STEP 1: UNDERSTANDING THE MATERIAL AND OBJECT TO DRAW
The purpose of using a grey-toned sheet for realistic colour pencil work is that it creates a perfect base for light and shadow effects.
For understanding the object, you need to study the material, texture, parts and layers of the object.
While creating reference for work, choose an angle where the height is properly visible. Yes shadows act as a height but little bit curve of high should be visible while creating (clicking) reference.
Always put light above the object to get white reflection highlight and perfect shadow depth which looks like height.
STEP 2: DRAW THE OBJECT
I use the grid method to draw the object. For this, you need to draw a grid on your reference picture. There are many mobile applications or drawing grid makers that you can use to draw a grid on your reference too.
Grid Method minimises the errors. Count the number of boxes on your reference and draw an equal number of boxes on your drawing sheet. Number the boxes, so it is easy for you to start drawing.
Draw the object by following the boxes.
STEP 3: INITIAL STAGE
Shading an apple is not easy as apple has varieties of shades on its surface and when you apply light on it for reference it imitates many more shades of red with variation in blacks and whites.
In this work first step is just fill up whole surface with green and for curve and top and for the middle bottom surface use base shade according to your Apple photo.
For top part of apple do it with green , dark green and chocolate brown shades.
For right surface curves of an Apple just add some chocolate brown tint over the green or light green on base layer as your reference image of Apple showing height so that surface must be look alike its right side lower surface is under light effect.
STEP 4: MIDDLE STAGE
For the surface on right tint with some light green and white on edge to show depth of that area.
For realistic strokes exact same like Apple surface try to catch every single shade you can see on reference.
Than for mid bottom part where all light is gathering do it with white gel pen to show light reflection on Apple surface .Do it properly because this is the important point in this work for an eye illusion effect to viewer.
For top part and throughout whole surface use green, light green, brown, yellow green chocolate brown for the surface texture of an Apple.
